In the artist’s words, this work is described as “A grisaille portrait of a man whose face is covered by his right hand. The man’s index finger is pointed upward and he holds a paintbrush. A biblical verse is tattooed on his wrist.”
Joshua Rainer (b. 1996, Detroit, MI), lives and works in Detroit. Rainer’s formal art education began at the Birmingham Bloomfield Arts Center (BBAC) in 2012. Rainer earned a BFA in Illustration at Detroit’s College for Creative Studies (CCS) in 2018. An instructor at the BBAC, Rainer is currently pursuing an MFA in Painting at the Cranbrook Academy of Art as a Gilbert Fellow. To date, Rainer has been in two group exhibitions at the Cranbrook Art Museum, received a Certificate of Excellence from the Portrait Society of America and was selected to appear in New American Paintings MFA Annual Issue 177. Rainer was an artist in residence at ISCP in 2024.
